Creator Blog #5: D*Con and Beyond!

Another DragonCon has come and gone.  Being from Atlanta, most of the Star Command Crew has been attending DragonCon in some form or another since the mid-90s.  This year was the first year we’ve ever had a product to promote, and it’s certainly a different experience from behind the table.  My first D*C experience was in 1997, and even that far back I’ve wondered what it’s like to be an exhibitor.  Well, now I know: it’s amazing. We saw a lot of pretty awesome cosumes, gave out hundreds of fliers, comics, and buttons, and generally had a blast meeting a lot of interesting people.  It was exhausting, but worth every minute.

If you’re on Facebook, check out our Star Command Group [here] Invite your friends!  We’ll also have an official Facebook fan page up soon, so keep an eye out for that, as well.

Don’t forget our Twitter feeds for the bridge crew!  Or, if you’d rather get your tweets in convenient digest form, just head [here]to get them all in chronological order.

We’re moving full speed ahead to bring you more Star Command over the next few months.  Keep watching this space!

Creator’s Blog 4: Conventions and More Conventions!

OK so the bit where I said I was going to update this more…well I didn’t lie so much as bend the truth in an interesting angle. But the big news for this month is that Star Command will be attending Dragon*Con in Atlanta GA over the Labor Day holiday (9/4-9/7). We will be recuiting new members for the USS Lee and giving away tons of free stuff. Come check us out if you’re at the convention!

Working at a convention is always an experience. Hours of boredom punctuated by flurries of activity. Comraderie with your fellow table-holders, and more than a few “What The Hell Was That?” moments. HGE and Star Command have had the priviledge of working several different-sized conventions from the very small to the very large and it’s been a blast all around. I’m really excited to see what Dragon*Con will bring.

I’ve never agreed with Martin Lawerence, except in this case when taking a quote out of context from “Bad Boys II: Badding Harder With More Badness”.

Anyways, until recently Star Command has been something of a lark. Something fun I did with friends. “Let’s make a movie in my backyard!” But now it’s become a product. Something people are interested in, excited about it’s future, and so on and so forth. So it’s made me become a lot more serious about the project and it’s future.

I’ll be posting here much more regularly and updating the website more frequently. Soon there will be casting updates, on-set photos and video diaries, actual studios and sets, professional people working professionally!

I’m excited and you should be too!

Hi everyone!

Well things are beginning to ramp up again around HeadGames Studios. We are working on an addendum to the Star Command Pilot Episodes. Star Command: The Special Edition. No, in this one Sheppard will still shoot first. But we’re cleaning up audio, fixing some glitches and generally making it a better DVD. Plus we’re adding bonus features, a Creator Commentary and a Cast Commentary (with a 2-Drink minimum), plus a few treats we’re planning to release  over the next few months. If you’re interested in seeing the HeadGames cast and crew live then come out and see us at our upcoming Convention appearances:

MobiCon 15-17, Mobile AL

TimeGate Con, May 22-24, Atlanta GA

Creator’s Blog 1: New Beginnings

Hello to everyone and welcome to the Star Command site. I’m Ben Boardman, one of the creators, writers and directors of this series. From time to time I’m going to try and update you, the viewer, with what’s going on behind the scenes. How the shows are progressing, our successes and our stumbling blocks. Hopefully we’ll give you a good look at the triumphs and pitfalls of being a low (no) budget filmmaker.

First let me explain how this whole Crazy Idea <tm> came about. About two years ago Jason Carlile (the other creator of this show) and I were hanging out watching a fairly crappy episode of Star Trek: Enterprise and we started riffing on the idea of the worst ship in Starfleet. From there the idea morphed and evolved into a riff on the entirety of science fiction television and films. That first night we basically came up with the entire bridge crew and the Lee.

Fast forward a few months. I couldn’t get the idea of Star Command out of my head. I sat down and banged out scripts for the first two episodes. The first an introduction to the ship, the crew and a sample adventure for these misfits to set the tone for things to come. The second was a wacky adventure meant to showcase our goofy sensibilities. Jason and I had been working with Brian Clements and Zach Gaskins doing HeadGames Podcast for the better part of a year at that point and we ended up roping them into the production. From there things began to snowball, sets were built, roles were cast, props were acquired, costumes were made. We spent a year filming off and on, editing, re-editing, and doing post production work. The film finally came together in a “final” (I still tweak occaisionally) version just in time for our first exhibition at MegaCon in Orlando FL.

We were nervous and excited. We weren’t sure what kind of reception we’d get, especially since we had done pretty much no advertising and all we had was a little booth with our video playing and our own winning personalities. Over the course of three days we sold more than 20 DVDs. We were elated, this was a good sign, people actually seemed to like our stuff.  Less than 2 weeks later we exhibited again at MomoCon in Atlanta. Our booth was even smaller, and this convention was more anime-themed than sci-fi themed. I wasn’t expecting much. By the end of the weekend we had sold another 20 DVDs and sold out our production run.

Now we’re moving forward with a little money in the bank and some new ideas. We’re starting to plan Episodes 3, 4 and 5. We’re looking for studio space to launch more professional productions. And starting to advertise around the web. All in all it’s been a fantastic experience that’s getting better every day. It’s going to be great fun sharing the future with all of you.

I can’t wait to get started!
